A contemplative practice offers an opportunity to pause, become fully present, and develop greater awareness of your thoughts, feelings, and inner experience. Through regular moments of quiet reflection, we can cultivate clarity, self-awareness, and a more conscious way of engaging with ourselves and the world around us.
The Pause
A simple practice for coming back to yourself.
In the busyness of everyday life, we can become so focused on what we are doing that we lose touch with how we are being.
The Pause is a simple invitation to stop, become present, and listen inwardly.
Find a quiet place and give yourself five minutes.
Sit comfortably and allow your body to settle.
Take a slow, gentle breath in.
And slowly breathe out.
You don’t need to change your breathing or clear your mind. Simply notice that you are here.
Now bring your awareness to your body.
Notice how you feel.
Perhaps there is tension. Perhaps there is ease. Perhaps there is tiredness, excitement, heaviness or nothing in particular.
There is nothing to fix.
Simply notice.
Then gently ask yourself:
“What is present for me right now?”
Don’t search for an answer.
Allow whatever comes to come.
You may notice a thought, a feeling, a sensation, an image or simply a sense of stillness.
Stay with it for a few moments.
Then ask:
“What do I need right now?”
Again, listen rather than analyse.
When you are ready, take one more slow breath.
Acknowledge yourself for taking these few moments to pause.
Then gently return to your day, carrying a little more awareness with you.
A gentle reminder
There is nothing you need to achieve in this practice.
The purpose is simply to pause long enough to hear what may already be within you.
Pause. Notice. Listen. Be.
